I may be wrong, but when I visited the website briefly I got the impression there is no easy "Click Here" button to download VMA.

VMA only runs under the WIndows operating system, but it is so good that I am going to degrade my Mac with the PC emulator so I can have daily access to VMA! There are no awards for altruism in astronomy, but if there were Christian and Patrick would win first place.

VMA could easily have been the foundation of a very successful commercial software company, but they continue to give it away. Christian Legrand and Patrick Chevalley created VMA six years ago and have shared it with nearly a half-million users.

Finally, the Pro 4 version includes a totally separate piece of software, PocketLun, which displays extensive information about the terminator location and visibility of features on a Pocket PC.

The new VMA also shows thousands of images from Earth including the best from the master imagers Paolo Lazzarotti and Wes Higgins, plus new tools to enhance and modify the images. These often large volcanic ash units have been widely overlooked by amateurs but now are just a click away.
One new database is the catalog of about 100 pyroclastic deposits mapped by US Geologic Survey and coworkers. One of the major improvements is the use of Lunar Orbiter IV images that were destriped following the procedure of Niels Noordhoek. The new Pro 4.0 version includes more professional data sets and the very best of amateur images, all seamlessly accessible from a graphic interface. But already the situation is much better with the announcement of a greatly improved version of an already wonderful product, Virtual Moon Atlas. It has never been easier to distil so many source files into a single, high-quality image.Image from Virtual Moon Atlas of Christian Legrand and Patrick ChevalleyĪ few days ago I bemoaned the difficulty of working with diverse lunar data sets.

Once the high frame rate images have been loaded, typically as a movie file in either AVI or SER format, all that you’re required to do is click ‘Analyse’, wait for the program to sort through all of the frames, set your alignment points either manually or automatically, and hit the ‘Stack’ button. The program’s interface appears daunting at first, but is quite simple to use. It seamlessly combines the results into a single result that is many times smoother and better defined than the individual frames that were processed. ‘Lucky imaging’ is the process of taking hundreds or thousands of images of a Solar System object with a high frame rate camera, extracting the best frames, aligning them and averaging them together.ĪutoStakkert! is the current king of registration- stacking software, automating the process and offering the ability to apply it to small sections of an image. Image processing freeware Autostakkert!Īutostakkert! combines frames into one image If you’re an active observer who likes to plan ahead, Cartes du Ciel is a great package to become familiar with. This allows you to view the chart representation and then see an image of that region of sky overlaid with the chart information. +21.Ī nice feature is the ability to request a Digitised Sky Survey (DSS) image of the region covered by the chart. Majoring on accuracy, Cartes du Ciel also supports the latest GAIA EDR3 star catalogue, which provides positional and physical data on approximately 1.8 billion objects brighter than mag.
Telescope control is a major feature of this program, connecting to your mount via either the separately available ASCOM and INDI protocols (both open source and free). There are many configuration options to this freeware, including different projection settings, which can all be adjusted to give you the chart you need.
The program generates accurate charts of any part of the sky, plotting the positions of major and minor Solar System objects, the extensive list of which includes many of the fainter moons of the gas and ice giants. While Stellarium attempts to simulate a realistic view of the night sky, Cartes du Ciel is more chart-oriented. Cartes du Ciel generates sky charts without over-complicating the process
